January got off to a howling good start for all of the pups here at TGMS. Students and staff arrived back from the Christmas Break well-rested and ready to get back into the learning spirit.
One bit of great news we received was that TGMS had been approved for the “Manitoba Grant for Innovation in Citizenship Education”. The Grade 7 class, with the help of their Social Studies teacher Mrs. Gisele Harding, applied for this grant earlier in the year. Their proposal, entitled “Re-Energize, Re-cycle, Re-Think, Re-charge”, focuses on addressing the need for battery recycling facilities in our communities. With the $1000 grant, students will do research on the topic, visit and volunteer at local facilities, and discover possible solutions to this problem. Congratulations to Mrs. Harding and the Grade 7 class on their initiative in this worthy project.
On January 13, we welcomed presenters from the Oak Hammock Marsh Interpretive Centre. The Grade 5s and 6s participated in presentations on “Wacky Weather” and “Creatures of the Night”, while the Grade 7s and 8s were involved in learning about “Radio Telemetry” and a “Mini-Envirothon”. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the presenters, and also to the Pembina Valley Conservation District for sponsoring this workshop for our students.
January brings about many sports opportunities for our students at TGMS. The after school curling league is still rocking every Monday after school. The extra-curricular Grade 7 and 8 basketball season is bouncing along as well. Our boys and girls have each played one game, hosted by TGMS, and the schedule will continue in February. The Grade 5s and 6s have also been invited to participate in after-school basketball with the help of Mr. Bernie Hildebrand and Mr. Ron Hildebrand. The students are learning some strong basketball skills and we hope to set up an exhibition game with another school in the division. Our Intramural program continues to take place every day at noon. Floorball has just finished, and basketball has started this past week.
The end of January brought lots of excitement for the Grade 7s and 8s as they prepared to write their midterm exams. While evaluation is one of the purposes of exams, they are also tool to help students develop study skills and have the experience of preparing for an exam before they reach high school. The second half of the year official starts Monday February 1, and reports will be sent home with all students on Friday February 5.
Looking ahead, February is “I Love to Read Month” and TGMS has chosen the theme “Reading Around the World”. We have planned a number of activities such as reading about various countries and cultures, participating in a Mini-Olympics, and helping to prepare an “International Lunch”. We will also be having a Book Fair from February 8 to 12. Contact our awesome librarian, Mrs. Karen Potter, if you would like to help with any of our activities.
I can’t believe half the school year has already passed by. I look forward to what the next months will bring!
